Ethan's Story

Ethan
Age 5
Phoenix Children's Hospital
Rare Kidney Disease

A 6-month-old infant with a 105-degree fever sends any parent into a panic. Simply seeking help with their son’s fever, Ethan’s parents were quickly met with bigger news. Their son had congenital nephrotic syndrome, a rare form of kidney disease that disrupts the immune system.

Now 5 years old, Ethan has had both of his kidneys removed, and currently carries a kidney donated from his loving grandma. Between the countless surgeries and having to receive peritoneal dialysis several times a week, Ethan’s relatives have come to accept the staff at Phoenix Children’s Hospital as family.

Like many boys, Ethan loves dogs and watching his favorite movies like “The Emperor’s New Groove.” He also enjoys lending a hand at hospital fundraisers so other kids can receive help. Most of all, Ethan loves to tell people about his caring family. He regularly points to his belly and exclaims, “My grandma’s kidney is right here!”
